Lakeview, Chicago History
Now one of the largest neighborhoods on Chicago’s north side, Lakeview was first settled by farming families from Luxembourg, Germany, and Sweden. One of the first permanent buildings was the Hotel Lake View where West Sheridan meets Lake Shore Drive. In 1889 Lakeview township was annexed into the city to accommodate the public services required to support the fast-growing and large community which originally had a span of Diversey to the north to Devon Avenue, Western Avenue to the lakefront. Today there are still many neighborhoods within Lakeview.
Lakeview is one of the largest neighborhoods and includes East Lakeview, Southport Corridor, Wrigleyville, and Roscoe Village. Lakeview East includes a stretch of North Lake Shore Drive that is lined with a mix of Beaux-Arts and Vintage co-op and condominium buildings, high rises built mid to late century offering a mix of architecture and a high-density capacity.
Lakeview Chicago Restaurants, Shops and Attractions
Home to Diversey and Belmont Harbors and the Diversey Driving Range and Miniature Golf as well as the lakefront trail, recreation abounds. Clark and Broadway streets are lined with thoughtfully curated shops (Four Sided, The Inkling Shop, and Wigglyville, Inc.) and locally-owned restaurants (Wilde Bar & Restaurant and Mia Francesca).
Just to the north and west is Wrigley Field and Gallagher Way which are at the heart of Wrigleyville where you will find many walk-up brick and greystone buildings built in the late 1880s and ’90s. Some of the most festive beer gardens are here: Murphy’s Bleachers, Casey Moran’s, and Metro for live music. About 1/2 mile west you’ll find the Southport Corridor for local boutiques and large retailers side by side: Krista K and M2. Dynamic food scene too: Uncommon Ground, Coda di Volpe, and Tango Sur – Music Box Theater is must visit too! A favorite street to many is the historic Alta Vista which was built by a developer in 1904 who was inspired by rowhomes in London.
Commute time is 20 minutes to the loop, 30 minutes to O’Hare and Midway.
